Information Technology Something New

December 19th, 2011

When people hear the words “Information Technology,” the first things that come to mind are computers and the Internet. It may also bring up words like “network,” “intranet,” “server,” “firewall,” “security,” as well as more arcane expressions such as “router,” “T-1,” “Ethernet,” or the mysterious and exotic-sounding “VoIP” (pronounced “voyp”).

In fact, information technology is all of these things, and more. It’s hardly new, however. Information technology is as old as the brain itself, if you think of the brain as an information processor. As far as I.T. being a science, even that goes back as far as the earliest attempts to communicate and store information.

And that is essentially what information technology is: the communication and storage of information, along with the ability to process and make use of the information stored. In this chapter, we’ll begin with a brief history of I.T., what it comprises today, and the different major types of I.T. systems available today.

A Short History of Information Technology

As human societies have grown in size and complexity, so has the need to collect, store and transmit information. While it could be argued that brains represent a form of “bio-information technology,” Greek word “Tektra” – from which we get the word “technology” – really refers to scientific or mechanical knowledge, particularly that which involves the use of tools. Therefore, we’ll begin our journey with humans first attempts to record and transmit knowledge through mechanical means.

Manage Information Technology Better With IT Service Balanced Scorecard

December 19th, 2011

IT service management is a practice for controlling information technology system with its philosophies focused on the point of view of the customers. Years before, this was centered on their internal organization and the technology that they use. As things change, evolve and progress, providing focus on the customers became the priority. The discipline is not about the proper usage of a product or the technical specifications of the system; it is focused on the framework of the activities related to information technology and the relationship of the IT personnel with the users and customers. Thus, there is no other way to measure the efficiency of the management process than to use IT service balanced scorecard. Since the BSC is not only concerned with the financial details of a business, you can utilize this tool to effectively gauge how well the supervision of the IT services is carried out.

In order to direct the use of the IT service balanced scorecard in this department, there is a need to first align the organizational strategy with information technology. There are some things that you should avoid though when implementing this type of BSC. One is an IT focused view of the performance of the IT department. You should also stay away from measures that hardly contribute to the success of the company, the deficiency in defining the standard metrics and being over-dependent on business tools.

The most important thing that you should remember when using the IT service balanced scorecard is the integration of the business strategy with IT service management. There are six traits that successful scorecards share in the field of information technology. The first one is that it is simple. The simplicity in the presentation makes it easier for the viewers to understand what the document is about. Simplicity also denotes that there are not more than 20 metrics for the whole organization already. They should be written using non-technical language so that everyone in the company can easily grasp what the organization wants to measure.

An advanced scorecard explicitly links itself to the strategy of information technology. This means that it should be firmly paired with the strategic planning process so that it can aid in tracking the progress of the strategy against the objectives and goals. Executives should also be broadly committed to the full process. Both senior IT professionals and business managers should participate in the whole scorecard process including the design and the ongoing phases.

The metrics in the computer network support BSC should be relatable throughout the entire company. To achieve this, meetings and discussions should be held prior to the selection of the metrics. This will lead to consensus in metrics definitions. Aside from the main four perspectives of the typical BSC, the IT service balanced scorecard includes two more. Information security pertains to metrics that check the remediation efforts of the firm for the known and common vulnerabilities. The other is about metrics that measure the enterprise initiatives, which will then highlight the contributions of information technology in initiating strategic importance.

What Is Plastic Injection Moulding

November 22nd, 2011

Injection moulding is often ranked as the one of the commonly used processes in the production of plastic items. The popularity of plastic injection moulding is often due to the fact that it is a fast process which can be used to produce vast quantities of identical plastic items ranging from disposable consumer goods to high precision engineering components.

Typically Produced Products
The majority of thermoplastics, such as nylon, polystyrene and polycarbonate are produced through the injection moulding process, as are the majority of all plastic products ranging from micro parts to large components such as wheelie bins. Also, the fact that this process can produce items that range greatly in shape and size has resulted in the extension of the boundaries of plastic design and enabled significant replacement of traditionally used materials in part due to light weighting and freedom of design.

The Basic Process
The basic process involves the introduction of a material, via a hopper, into the injection moulding machine. This moulding machine consists of a heated barrel, equipped with a reciprocating screw (which is driven by a hydraulic or electric motor), which itself feeds the molten polymer into a temperature controlled split mould through a channel system of runners and gates.

The reciprocating screw plasticises (melts) the polymer as well as acting as a ram during the injection phase. The shearing action of the screw on the polymer also provides additional heating during this part of the process and the polymer is then injected into a mould which is created according to the required dimensions of the finished product.

The pressure used when injecting the polymer into the mould is very high and (depending on the material being processed) this pressure could even reach one thousand atmospheres.

The tools used in the plastic injection moulding process are typically made out of steel (as it can be hardened and plated if required) and alloys of aluminium to allow increased cutting and hand polishing speeds. The costs associated with the production of the tools required in this process mean that injection moulding tends to lend itself to high volume production of plastic products and components.

There is a large number of companies which specialise in the production of plastic components and products via injection moulding and the supply of moulds for the process. The fact that the service provided by these companies is demanded by a wide range of customers (including those in the defence and aerospace industries) shows the importance of this process and the necessity of its products.
